Best Japanese Food Around

by nutnub

Having read some reviews, I'm not too shocked to hear when people complain. Initially, they were not as patient. The place's service is not as horrendous as stated, but it's not the best in the city.

This restaurant is definitely really traditional. If you know anything about the Japanese culture, you would know that they don't instigate issues. The waitresses are very polite and mostly try to avoid contact outside of being professional. If your drinks are running low, they'll come by and make sure everything is ok. They understand if you ask for a few minutes before ordering; all is fine as long as you treat them with respect.

After ordering, the wait definitely pays off. While they have many standard entrees, the thing that people don't really know about is its amazing "boat dinners." Simply put, they put as much food as a meter long boat can hold. Personally, I go for the Love Boat order every single time, and have not yet been disappointed with the food.

However, you do not have to wait the fifteen minute preparation time. You can call in and make a reservation (which is required for parties more than 5 I believe).

If you trust the other reviews, then I'm afraid you're missing out. Take a chance and you will certainly not be let down.

Absolutely satisfied with service and food for 10 years

by babsdrew

I have been going to Yoshino for 10 years or so. I've never notice slow or bad service. The food is always good and my dinner parties are always satisfied, happy I recommended the restaurant, they are pleased with the service and taste of the food. We've never had to wait 30 minutes for a meal. The ladies dressed in their Kimonos are always gracious and smiling.

  • Pros: parking is a bit limited
  • Cons: good service, great food, prices satisfactory

In love with this place!!!

by toroishan

This place may seem old and messy, but their food is wonderful!!!!!! The waitresses were nice and the sashimi platter was over the top good for it's price!!! There were amaebi, taco and other great selections of fresh fishes that was so tasty!!

They've got quite a selections of grilled fish(i think it's grilled) that is delicious and good for it's value.

Their combos arealso great and the portions are quite big!

  • Pros: Great sashimi, great price

WARNING!!! THE WORST EVER SERVICE!!!

by axiomaticalove

this place is quite possibly the worst place i've ever eaten at. the food was ok but the service from start to finish was a nightmare! my friend and i entered an almost empty dinning room and they said we still had to wait. the server tried to force us to order before we sat down but we refused. our food took more than 20 minutes and as soon as it arrived they turned half of the lights off in the dining room! a few minutes later they threw the check on the table and asked if we'd pay right then and there! it wasn't even five minutes since they dropped the check! the server asked again and we in return ask what time they closed. she responded that they closed at 2pm but it was barely 1:45pm! i said i'd pay in a little bit and then some other lady, i think owner, came by and demanded that we pay. i was so enraged by how we were being treated i could barely eat. i'm not one to be too critical but this place was by far the worst restaurant ive ever been to... i can't even tell you how the food tasted since i could barely eat it in peace. we left appalled and my friend, who's japanese, said something japanese to that lady and all she did was grunt and turn away. i will never return. this should be a fair warning for anyone who interested in this restaurant hell.

  • Pros: ABSOLUTELY NONE
  • Cons: EVERYTHING!!!

Worse Service EVER!!!!

by dorchig

This was my third time trying this place. The first time, we went for dinner and I didn't go there for at least 2 years. When my hubby & I went there at evening, the resturant wasn't busy at all but we ended up wait for almost 30 mins for food. That was the reason why we never went back. Recently, my coworkers wanted to go there for lunch and I just wanted to try one more time so I went there. I ordered an Udon combination and it had a pork don so I asked for the chicken but they said "no subsititution". One of my coworker said maybe they are microwaving the food so there is no subsititution. Obviously he was kidding, but i realized the service was the same. The food was okay but then the service was slow (20 mins). I had their sale handroll and it was pretty good. So I decided to go back there for the 3rd time w/ my hubby for dinner. My hubby got there 5 mins earlier and I asked my hubby to order the food on the phone since they are so slow, so My hubby asked the waitress if he can be seated, but she said "if your party is not here then you can't be seated". Ridiculous! the restaurant wasn't even busy!!!! To make my story short, i saw this couple was eating at the other table and a couple joined them w/ baby. The waitress told them they need to move because they can't pull out a chair from another table. OMG!!!! I said that's it.. this can't be happening in Orange County... If you don't care about the service and you want to tip them anyway, try this Otherwise, DO NOT GO THERE!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I would recommand FUKADA (next to Spectrum) instead!!!! They have BEST Udon EVER.. and they serve organic food!

good if you can handle it

by eat_and_sleep

so maybe the service is slow and the place kind of old and sticky. or the waitresses in kimono are possibly from another century, but hey, you get a lot of sushi for the money. it is a good place to go if you want your japanes food japanese. i recommend the sushi dinner from the sushi bar ($20), the most you will get from a japanese restaurant in the area -- even comes with uni and amaebi (no head). they do have good ameaebi (big and juicy) and comes with head if you order it separately from the sushi list.

the chirasi is excellent becuase they put different kids of sweet peas in them even though the fish tend to be big and unwieldy sometimes (e.g reqquires two bites). it comes together nicely however, albeit a little rough. the $1 hand roll is a nice touch, but who can eat that much food...?

lastly, the dinner sets are excellent -- you can choose your own grilled fish and comes with various side dishes, like steamed egg custards. overall a lot a varieties.

once you get used to it, you will want to go back once in a while.

  • Pros: good overall menu coverage of real japanese food
  • Cons: service can be patchy, place needs updating

Good food, slow service.

by lcacds

This restaurant has really a great Chirashi, I go there just for it every week. Their other stuff like tempura and sesame chicken are sort of average, but they give you lots of it. The $1 spicy tuna handroll is the greatest deal on earth! The service is slow, and I often have to ask repeatedly to get what I want. But the sushi chefs are great!

  • Pros: good value
  • Cons: slow service

Very rude and awful service !

by amakusa

We had lunch at Yoshino restaurant in Tustin on May 26, 2006 and were very disappointed with their service and food. Our waitress did not serve our teas until our foods(Makunouchi bento specials) were served even though we asked repeatedly. When our foods finally served, she finally brought teas and soup together with our meal. And then when we were just about to start our meal, she immediately brought our check to our table without even asking us how we were doing. That waitress should be fired. In term of food, my truly honest opinion was O.K.. I can have much better Japanese food at A take-out place. Very disappointed. Will NEVER GO AGAIN. If you have meals at any of MacDonlads, you will be treated with respect and professionalism and with smile in their face to "thank us" for coming to their restaurant, but not in this Japanese restaurant.
