Worlds greatest Chie Rellenos.
I have been eating at Esther?s almost as long as I can remember. Starting out life at the now closed Downey location, this "Hole-in-the-wall" taco house has grown into a bright and friendly family hang out.
Unlike another rater, the service I have received at the Placentia location has been prompt, friendly if somewhat rushed at lunch time. The menu is basic Mexican. Burritos, Tacos (soft or hard) chile verde and colorado. These days, since I have to drive 80 miles to visit, there is only one thing on the menu! Chile Rellenos. Home roasted Anaheim chilies, stuffed with Jack cheese, bathing in their special clear sauce. Just like our other Mexican-American neighbors used to make (my sister and Esther?s daughter were in Brownies together). Served with steamed flour or corn, you get two with the dinner or order al a carte and pile up the plates. For a change of pace try the chile relleno burrito! An addition to the menu since the old Downey days is a fine selection of beers including Newcastle Brown Ale (my personal fav). Expect large crowds from the neighborhood, sports teams, birthday parties and groups in to watch the game of the night. This is not a quiet little spot, but a place to go with a group and eat like there is no tomorrow for not much money. Enjoy!
Very Rude Service on Two Occasions.
Two visits to Esther's: Unsatisfactory. First time, 45 minutes after ordering, waitress brought the BILL!!! No Food!!! We were astonished, especially when she went up to the kitchen window, grabbed a few plates that were similar to our order and flung them at us. The food was not quite right, but we were in a hurry and starving, so we ate it. Weeks later, we gave it another try. We sat at a table with no service at all for 5 minutes. A couple entered before us and received chips and menus immediately. Finally, (most of the workers were behind the bar talking), I got up and got some menus, to which one of the waiters replied "we'll wait on you ma'am". So I said ok and sat down. That waiter then proceeded to serve chips and menus to the 4 men who came in AFTER US. We walked out.
