Love it!. Great spot to get a nice vegan meal, its a wonderful atmosphere and the staff is calm cool and relaxed... its perfect!
Citysearch Editorial Review. Veggie-friendly but not entirely meatless, this Downtown Fullerton favorite is chock full of salads, wraps, sandwiches, soups, tacos, and lasagnas, with dishes like veggie mu shu medley and chicken cacciatore rounding out the 21-page menu. Most of the food portions are generous, but the salads are downright enormous and contain enough vegetables for the hungriest herbivores. Inside, the 40+ year-old restaurant has retained its hippie dippie feel with trippy wall drawings and kitschy paraphernalia. The earthy atmosphere, reasonable prices ($10-$15), and generally healthy food have made this longtime must. And even though you can’t tell from the small main dining room, there is an outdoor patio as well as multiple rooms annexed from neighboring businesses that can be reserved for groups.
Quasi-Vegetarian, inexpensive, Thai peanut dressing, and leek soup..
This converted old house/office lends a great atmosphere to the restaurant. Odd decor and walls painted by locals lend an artsy feel. Casual, seat yourself. Happens to be next to an open-air Farmers Market every Thursday night during summer! Featuring tons of fresh produce, beer garden, food, shopping, and live entertainment. Family friendly. Great place to finish the night.
Mostly vegetarian fare, but staunch Vegans may have to inquire a bit. Carnivores, like me, have plenty of tasty options too! Great deli-sandwiches stacked with meat and plenty of chicken in the main courses is available. Ruta's gives us meat lovers the onus to work more veggies and grains into our lives, and I thank them for it. Ruta's is perfect for a casual mixed group of both types.
YOU MUST HAVE THE LEEK SOUP! (On the menu I think its called "cocky leeky") You'll crave it after one cup. All meal portions are quite generous. The salads are in huge bowls, with lots-o-veggies, and they make all their own dressings. The Thai peanut dressing is so good it needs to be bottled! I also suggest the "GreatPot", steamed veggies and cheese w/ side rice served in the very collander it was steamed in.
Small but appropriately eclectic bottled beer and wine selection.
Service is up and down. They have far too few people working at busy times to accommodate the seat-yourself environment. I've seen servers suddenly get stacked with up to 10-12 packed tables at a time; they are ALWAYS very friendly, but in their situation, bottlenecks seem unavoidable. If you catch Rutas at one of these moments, have your order ready to go with extras, sides, refills, napkins, etc. up front. Get in at the right time, and youll be very, very pleased. Note: Big Redheaded server named Shane or Dane (sorry, cant remember, but at 65 you cant miss him!) will always make your evening awesome. If you see him, sit in his section.
good, fresh food at great prices.... If you want a relaxed environment (seat yourself) with good, fresh, food and a menu that offers many vegetarian items, then look no further. This place is great for hanging out in a relaxed environment and eating inexpensively--I've never been disappointed!
bigkahuna. It's been here since 1970, and been serving happy hippies ever since. Great salads, soups and specials, something for everyone! Don't miss it!
