What A Disappointment.
Used to go alot in the 80s- never again.
Went Sat. evening table was wiped down with greasy smelly water. They recleaned it and it was still covered in grease including the seats . The entire resturant smelled dirty. Salad looked like it was just poured out of the bag. Chili was totally bland , nothing fresh about it and looked more like refried beans. We had ordered a appetizer plate that was fried to a burnt dark brown. The bread bowls were tasteless. The group of 4 wasted drunk people in the place yelled the entire time we were there. Im sorry I took my wife and daughter there, the health dept. needs to take a close look at this place.
Consistently good chili, decade after decade.. I've eaten at Charlies Chili branches (the ones in Costa Mesa and Newport Beach, both) many times from 1973 to present. While the food and service can vary sometimes (on rare occasions, I've had bad food or service here), for the most part the quality of food and and service has remained consistently high. The chili cheese omelets are my favorite for breakfast. For supper, I go for their giant "chili platter": chili and buns and fries enough to feed a very hungry person. The world around them continues to change, but Charlies has continued to deliver great chili as the decades roll by.
Delicious breakfast all day!. Great ocean view patio which is dog friendly and great people watching. I love the breakfast which you can order any time of day, also the chili and cornbread is yummy. Inside there's plasma t.v.s - it's casual and homey. The service is friendly and good.
Horrible Service. Charlie Chili's has been a favorite of mine and my husbands for years. This Mother's Day (2009,) we went for breakfast for my "special day". My husband asked the patio-waitress for a refill of coffee, and she went ballistic! She yelled across the courtyard and said she was the only one working outside. We thought that was bizarre, but nothing prepared us for her running, yes running to our table and throwing our food at us. I told her I would like to speak with her manager and she just laughed. She said their was no manager on site. She was right. I went inside and was told by all the staff that they do not have a manager on site. I left my name, number and email address, but no one has every contacted me. I have asked around the Newport area and have been told by other restaurant owners that they have heard a lot of complaints lately about the waitresses. Food is great, service is horrible!
Charlie's offers late-night comfort food--in a bowl--at the Newport Pier..
In Short
Whether in a bowl, smothered over fries or stuffed inside an omelet, Charlie's chili is a perfect blend to end an evening at the Newport Pier. Settle into a cozy booth at this historic joint and order up some comfort all day and late into the night. In summer, Charlie's tends to extend their hours to a 2am or even 3am closing, but these hours aren't set in stone, so call ahead.
