Editorial Review for Opah Restaurant & Bar – by Audrey D. Brashich
The Scene
Huge portions of artfully presented entrees, simple decor and a fabulous-looking crowd make Opah a destination for innovative cuisine and a hint of glamour in Orange County.
The Food
Opah specializes in seafood, particularly its signature dish and namesake, a grilled swordfish-like steak with a ginger glaze and pineapple salsa. Creative touches like leek hoisin butter sauce, coconut-soy beurre blanc and Mexican papaya relish complement many of the other fresh fish selections. Salads are crisp and colorful: Try the mango slaw with zucchini and cilantro, which accompanies the lemon-grass-skewered ginger shrimp starter. Noodle dishes like the seafood jambalaya and Thai pasta with peanut sauce balance piquant flavors with cooling sauces. For dessert, warm dark chocolate croissant bread pudding with bourbon crème anglaise and white chocolate chunk cheesecake with a raspberry coulis and phyllo cookie are both artful and delicious.

Insider Tips
Where to SitTables are large, and the bar can be noisy. Ask to sit outside on the canopied terrace, if weather permits.
Specialty DrinkThe wine list is good, but the martini menu is extraordinary. Start with house specialty, the Opah martini, which is prepared with raspberry liqueur.
Live MusicLive bands perform every Wednesday and Sunday--the acts range from r&b, steel drums and Nuevo Flamenco groups. Call for schedule.

I guess for being the only restaurant in Aliso Viejo it's nice but I can get more value for my dollar going to Sizzler. My friends in Aliso swear by this place. I tried it out thinking my friends can't be that dumb or tasteless. Apparently, I was wrong. The food is comparable to Elephant Bar or a good Cheesecake Factory. Next time i'm in O.C. I'm going to stick to Newport or Laguna for dining.
Pros: Nice location....
Cons: ehh....

10 girlfriends and I went to this place for our annual holiday get-together. When the women on our side of the table ordered our entrees, including filet mignon, pasta, and fish, the waiter responded, "Would you like house or Caesar salad?" Surprised that a salad came with the entree, I responded, "Caesar, please." I don't normally order salads at restaurants, as I don't like to pay for cold food that I can make at home. When the food arrived, the waiter had charged us all $8 each per salad. Incredulous, I told the waiter, "None of the women on this side of the table had any idea that these weren't part of the meal." His response: "I'll get the manager." Interesting. Instead of saying, "I'm sorry, I believe I said, 'Would you like to ADD a salad" - he says, "Let me get the manager." Let me preface all of this by saying that this waiter had spent at least 15 minutes of his time taking numerous photos of our table, insisting on different poses and taking oodles of time flirting with mothers, mostly in their late thirties and forties. I realized immediately that this was all to disguise his "padding" the bill. The manager came over and heard my objection. His response: "Did you read the menu?' As if to say, "If you had read the salad section of the menu, you would have seen that we charge for salads." I, of course, no dummy, say, "That's nice. I don't EVER read the salad section - that's not what I'm here for. I did not order a salad - the waiter offered me one. I don't like the sneakiness of it, and I'm not paying for my salad." Instead of apologizing for the miscommunication, and eating the $2 cost of the whole table's salads, the manager actually argued with me. I couldn't remember why I insisted on ONLY going to restaurants in Laguna Beach, but now I remember. Laguna Beach restaurants don't treat their customers like idiots. DO NOT GO TO OPHAH'S! They are sneaky, dishonest, and the food is mediocre.
