Riptide in Mission Viejo.
Riptide has become a part of Orange County (along with Chomp, its counterpart in Fullerton), partly because it seems to be one of the few businesses in the Kaleidoscope that has flourished (others being the theater and Islands). Its success is understandable when you see the stylish, spacious interior and the large island that the sushi chefs stand in. The size of this huge island gives a lot of room to the sushi bar. You can stretch out and get comfy while waiting for your fish fix. There’s also an impressive waterfall-wall type decoration, and a big shiny motorcycle on a kind of pedestal that makes it feel like a nice attention-getting centerpiece. It all comes together to make a space that’s tailored to the nightlife crowd, with an impressive bar, big gleaming teppan yaki tables and the the large colorful aquarium in the front.
While Riptide fully embraces the “fun” approach to atmosphere, don’t think this is a bad thing where the food is concerned. Huge pink slabs of salmon were draped over a cutting board, just waiting to be artfully prepared. The tuna was deep ruby red, as it should be, and had good firm texture. As I sipped my Sapporo, a new roll came that was wrapped not in rice, but carved strips of cucumber. The contrast between the red tuna and the green cucumber really popped, and it lent itself to pictures well. I am usually more into fish than rolls, but the cucumber wrapping was a nice alternative to rice. The veggies were watery and crisp, and it felt even lighter than sushi usually does. I will definitely get something like this again.
The message to take away is that you’ll have a great time at Riptide. Try and get a seat on a Friday or Saturday – it will be a blast. Have some drinks, order some adventurous stuff, and you will not be disappointed. It’s not really a Japanese restaurant, (they have burgers and other standard kinds of stuff) but a night-spot where you can get some great food if you’re cool with the fact that it’s their own interpretation.
I love this place I came here for the first time last week and was shocked! Its a totally cool, upbeat, beautiful restaurant. I never knew it was there (in the Kaleidoscope)
The food was awesome. The teppanyaki show was awesome! Our chef even swallowed fire! My kids loved it. Im glad I finally found a place my whole family loves. Totally a must try!!!
ROCKIN' SUSHI IS THE BOMB.
Where to start, the service was amazing. We threw my wife a surprise Birthday Party with Balloons and a cake with 30 candles and the staff was so awesome, thanks, my wife had a blast. The food was fantastic, the show was amazing, my 5 year old and 1 year old loved it and didnt complain once which is rare at a restaraunt. The sound system was great and the entire restaraunt looks awesome. I would definately recommend this place for a fun date, for a fun night out with a family with kids of all ages that want to get out and have fun, oh ya, did I mention the service was great. Thanks to all at Riptide Rockin' Sushi.....
GREAT Food. The food was amazing. I LOVE sushi and have some favorites that I get over and over. At Riptide, I was able to try new and very delicious combinations that I had never seen offered anywhere else. The "World Famous" Tornado Roll, Caliente Roll, Screamin' O' Roll and Explosion Roll are fantastic. The restaurant was very clean and well organized. The only complaint I have is they realy need to do something about the sound system - it is so bad.
Not Good. It was not good food, all show. I have friends that saw a dead rodent under their table and left mid meal.
Poor horrible service R.i.p riptide yes R.I.P.tide!!!DON'T GO THERE!!!!. Good food, poor horrible service, My wife and I decided to try Riptide for Xmas party, in the 2nd order we about to order the cook said VERY RUDE TONE !!!NOT NOW I'M BUSY we never went back. If you want a great overall all you can eat sushi experience try Zenko, which is only 3 minutes away from R.i.p riptide
Good food, horrible service. I had read the reviews before going to Riptide, and was hoping that the negative ones were a fluke. Unfortunately, they were not. The food was actually good, but the restaurant does not appear to be at all well run. We sat outside, and the inside was literally deserted. Our brunch/lunch came out at 4 different times, and some of the people in our party were finishing their food as some of the other members of our party were still waiting to receive their food. Our waiter was very nice, but nowhere to be seen during the staggered delivery of our food. He did come out as the last plates were delivered to ask us if the manager had come out out talk to us. He had not, and never did. We received our bill at full price, with the gratuity included (Party of 10). We were very disappointed with our dining experience, but even more so when we were told the manager was coming and he/she never came. Incidentally, we never asked for the manager, only commented that the food was coming out staggered. There were plenty of employees inside.. in fact, one was behind the bar on a laptop computer. Definitely a disappointing experience.
Good food, poor service.
My wife and I decided to try Riptide for her birthday. I made online reservations and filled in the box that lets you tell the Maitre D' of any special requests. I said that it was my wife's birthday. This was a total waste of time. We arrived early and sat at the bar to enjoy a drink before dinner. The base speaker was so loud that we could not carry on a conversation. Not really a deal breaker but needs to be corrected. We were seated with a nice family of four and the waiter took our drink orders and returned with our drinks a reasonable amount of time. After that the service was down hill, it was like once we got our drinks the waiter just disappeared for the rest of the night. He never came back to refill the "Endless soda refills" or to get refills for anything. Never came back to check on us at all. He completely forgot the soup portion of the meal for the entire table. Seriously how do you forget to bring an entire course. Then after every body was finished he brought the check for the other family but my wife and I sat there for 15 minutes before I stood up and got his attention so he could bring us our check. He never ask if we wanted dessert. Nothing was done for my wife's birthday and when I mentioned to him that he forgot the soup portion of the meal he thought that it was funny and his eyes were red and half closed. It was the most unprofessional service we have ever received.
The food was really good but I would warn people that if they can't handle poor service then they better find another place to dine.
Best Sushi in Southern Cali!!!!. I LOVE this place!!! I live in San Diego and wish we had one closer. Riptide has given me by far the best sushi and dining experience! I recommend it to everyone. I love that they offer sushi and other food choices as well for those who don't eat sushi. The owners greet their customers and are really friendly. It's a great place for a party or big group of people. I also just recently went there for breakfast and ate some awesome peanut butter and chocolate chip pancakes! Yummy!!!
The Only Sushi you want!!!. This is the only sushi my friends and family will go to anymore...The rolls are huge and so delicious..The price is just right especially for happy hour and Thurs. nights. Are you kidding me all the food was great..it was kinda strange that you can get other types of food there, but I guess not everyone loves sushi or teppan. The service has always been fantastic, we have come many times with a large party and with children. Everything is always perfect. If you want a place that has a fantastic atmosphere, great service and yummy food, look no further. See you soon.
