Editorial Review for Leatherby's Cafe Rouge – by Amanda Knowles
In Short
Designed to complement the adjoining Renee and Henry Segerstrom Concert Hall, this elegant space features high-backed banquettes surrounded by shiny steel. Gleaming glass and a color palette of blues, greens and tans provide a stylish backdrop for a preconcert meal. Executive Chef Joachim Splichal, noted for his flagship eatery Patina in downtown Los Angeles, created a menu that includes specialties like Sonoma duck breast on candied yams with pomegranate jus, and macadamia nut-crusted ono with lemongrass-coconut sauce.

Waiter did not know what Vodkas the bar had so I took the liberty of correcting him. The waiter proceeded taking the wrong entree order for my boyfriend. When my order of Filet Mignon arrived, it was still pulsating (I ordered medium rare). When the incorrect order arrived for my boyfriend, the Filet Mignon (which should have been Rib-Eye) was cooked well done (which he ordered medium rare for the Rib-Eye). Both pieces of meat would have ended up being flung at a wall if this were a Hell's Kitchen episode. A special note for the bizarre desert menu, Guinness beer foam is NOT a dessert. The only suggested recourse for the mis-hap was refunding our pre-dinner cocktails which added insult to injury after we spent over $100 on a bottle of wine and over $100 on food. Truly a disappointing experience for the money paid.
Pros: Great location for an upper scale restaurant in the Performing Arts Center
Cons: Ambience lacked any thought or originality for being in a Performing Arts Center

Having been to most of the best restaurants in OC over the years I'm happy to report that Leatherby's delivers on all fronts. They have a new Chef (Lauren) who is putting out fabulous food. First before you make the reservation find out if there is a Performance that night, if so consider a different time when the Restaurant isn't as busy. We recommend the Tasting Menu which is executed perfectly. I can't remember better food in OC for quite sometime. Very high quality ingredients.
Pros: Great Food , Location
Cons: Busy on Performance Nights
