Crappy Time - Avoid this Cantina.
I can't believe that people of Irvine like to pay 2x & 3x the price of an El Torito for the same or slightly worse experience. Omar, the General Manager, should be shot for not knowing how to serve guest needs. I wouldn't go back for any price.
The whole restaurant is so noisy you can't hear the people you are with. Constant singing for atmosphere is really low-grade. This IS NOT AN UPSCALE facility, but its prices would make you think it is special.
Luckily they are across from the Cheesecake Factory, so after dinner we could go for deserts and drinks to talk and laugh. Yes, it's corporate their too....but they make you feel special and cater to your needs.
IN short the acoustics suck, the general manager is a jerk & the price is beyond acceptable. The only good thing is the valet service so that you can leave.
Javiers quality going down.
Rip Off $11.- for a margarita and they didn't even use fresh squized fruit, I bet they cook with food cans and microways.
Javiers got popular to fast in results quality went down the drain, I guess that's what happend when you become successful

For years my Company and I have enjoyed Javiers. I have averaged $3000 to $5000 per year as a customer and through company events.
No more. They've been slipping recently...a bi-product of their success. Too big for their britches, they've been upping their charges, and reducing the sizes of their proportions. $90 lunch for three people, a side of lettuce for $5 that was quoted at $1. A to go order where they charged for items not included in the order. Notice on a number of dishes they have smaller plates (that look bigger). A clever technique to reduce food costs while the customers do not notice.
When I went back, driving an hour, to meet with Sylvia, their manager at Spectrum and explained the situation, I was met with defensiveness. She would not credit me for the missed order. She said she 'might' do something nice when I come back...just ask for her. When I asked her to credit me for the missed order, she said she could not do that without crosschecking with the waiter.
Give me a break!!! I've been in the hospitality business for 30 years. What part of the 'the client is always right' that this entitled manager does not understand...particularly for a loyal client that spends thousands of dollars. I tried to reason with her as a fellow service provider...no luck.
This is one gringo that will no longer spend $$$$$$ on overpriced mexican food. Hospitality is worth extra $$$$. Arrogance is worth zero.

Bad BAD service- average food. How does a place like this stay so busy. The worst service on the planet. And the food is NOT exactly amazing.
After spending $60 on drinks and an appetizer, me and a friend were asked to finish our drinks and leave so other guests cold have the table.
To make matters worse, I called the owner to share my story. Before I can finish sharing my concerns, he interupts me to tell me his findings from talking with his staff at Irvine Spectrum. I'm told that we should have had our drinks and appetizer in the bar. Reservations aren't taken for parties of two. 2 hours was plenty of time for us to occupy a dining patio table. He no longer has time for the call and hangs up on me,
How arrogant and such a lack of knowledge about providing quality customer service. I will return to any of his restaurants.
To my friends: Check out the fire features and the Tequila God behind the bar - great sculptures The best "Shrimp Rojas" in the states. Add to the great atmosphe a great looking crowd and awesom food - Plan on spending time in the bar before or after your meal. Highly recomend the cabo azul combo - chile relleno? Shrimp taco and other more. This is the first place to bring a new guest to the coast -- Good views from the outdoor fireplace bar.
The Valet crashed my car!. My friends made reservations a week in advance for my bithday dinner ( A party of ten) at the Newport Beach Javier's. The valet line was a twenty minute wait and when we were finally seated it took an additional thirty minutes to get a menu. All of this would have been irritating but we there to celebrate and not complain. After paying nearly $1,000 for dinner, I went to retrieve my car only to find out that the VALET CRASHED NOT ONE BUT TWO OF OUR CARS!!!!!! After waiting for 45 minutes filling out paperwork and missing my birthday party at another location where people were waiting, I asked the manager Pepe if there was a place for my friends and I to sit and wait. He proceded to raise his voice and tell me no it wasn't his problem and there was nothing he was going to do about it! It caused a major scene.The other patrons watching him go off couldn't believe that he would be so rude after the valet just crashed two of our cars and caused a huge inconvenience! Bottom line : if Javier's wants repeat patrons who are willing to pay a little more for a nice atmosphere and great service they have to train their managers and wait staff to treat people with courtesy and respect. Pepe (the manager) has a very confrontational approach to problem solving and should be fired. He added complete insult to injury. I will never eat at Javier's again!
Stunningly BAD attitudes over good cuisine.
This review is for the new location in Crystal Cove (Corona Del Mar / Newport area)...
There is nothing but good to say about the quality, presentation, and physical environment of the restaurant itself. But it is all thrown out the window when one witnesses the pretense and arrogance of the staff. The manager of this location flew off the handle toward a group of what appeared to be very calm customers, and created a scene that was quite uncomfortable for the other patrons. From what we could see and hear, these particular customers had a bad experience with their own server (from what I heard from this server's other tables, not surprising!), and simply aired their complaint. This escalated into a defensive, shouting manager who embarrassed the entire restaurant enough to cause our own server to apologize for the situation. Our server cited a ''difficult customer.'' My response is that you'd best be REALLY EASY if you want to dine here. The manager was frightening and so out of control, I thought he was under the influence of something. Javier's immediately was surrounded by buzz of being the new ''it'' spot in our neighborhood. But word gets around when your establishment posesses such a hostile, too-cool-for-school management attitude. Unless there's a total attitude adjustment there, where a sincere appreciation is developed for its customers, Javier's will ultimately become a place where all its potential went down the drain.
Rip Off. I had lunch with a friend at Javier. We both had the dungeoness salad for $18, which was reasonable. I asked the server about getting a la carte tacos because we thought we might still be hungry. He mentioned "yes, we have it and its very very good with a spicy sauce with shredded cabbage." Sounded great! When we got the two a la carte tacos? The shrimp were coated in a thick batter and the shrimp were small. Two to be exact in each taco. When we got the bill the two tacos were $16. I don't mind paying for good food. But this was ridiculous, two tiny tacos for $16. If I had known it was gross tacos and expensive I would have order a full plate of something else. I asked the server he couldn't explain why it cost that much for two tiny tacos. I shouldn't have left any tips cause I was upset but I felt sorry for the server. Its not his fault for pricing something ridiculous like that.
One of my favorite places.
While it can be a bit of a pain to get in here on the weekends, it is a great place to grab lunch and sit outside during the day on Saturday or Sunday. Get a group together of 4 or more and make a reservation and we have yet to have a problem getting in.
The servers are attentive, the food is fresh and some of the best Mexican we have eaten anywhere in the country.
