Chocolate malt, black raspberry cheesecake and Swiss orange chip are among the specialty flavors at this Santa Ana ice cream shop. In addition to being a dessert stop for frozen bananas and ice cream sandwiches, the shop also doubles as a deli, serving salads and sandwiches.
Smooth, creamy goodness on a cone

I suppose there may be a few black sheep that don't find Hans' ice cream to be wonderful, but drive by any night of the week and the place will be packed. That's because it's FANTASTIC. It's a traditional ice cream parlor. They have great new flavors each month and some standards you just don't find in many ice cream shops anymore - like black cherry or black licorice. Unlike most of the chain shops, like Baskin Robbins, you will never get ice cream that is gritty with ice crystals from being melted and re-frozen. The scoops are huge. The staff has always been pleasant. I've been going to this ice cream shop for over 20 years, and make it a point to visit everytime I'm back in town. It just doesn't get any better.
- Pros: Great, fresh and creamy ice cream all the time
- Cons: Small shop that gets crowded fast

This place is great, ice cream was very rich and tasty. The service was friendly and the prices were great.
Disappointed

We tried this place with high hopes. It was recommended in Westaways magazine, a Citysearch favorite and the ice cream is homemade - what could go wrong? Maybe we went on an off night because we were severely disappointed. I LOVE ice cream - all kinds (even the exotic from other countries) but I couldn't even finish mine--and that's a first.
We test-tasted a couple flavors before we placed our order. Each one we tried didn't stand out. I chose the mint chocolate chip ice cream sandwich dipped in chocolate because they looked really good in their freezer display. The girl behind the counter said it was very popular. But after a couple of bites I completely regretted not getting something else. The chocolate coating didn't have any flavor - it was like eating a thin layer of cold wax. The mint tasted artificial. My husband's butter pecan was also dull in flavor. He got his in a waffle cone and even that wasn't up to par. It tasted like they forgot to put in salt and sugar. We tasted each other's ice cream and came up with the same results.
The people around us seemed to be enjoying their ice creams (the place was packed) and we thought, can they be eating what we are? The guy next to me had the same ice cream sandwich and he ate it in like three bites. I heard him say it's the best thing they have. What?!
I'd like to think that Hans' deserves a second chance... but when I think twice on it I better not risk it.
