Good Food Poor Service. I've yet to visit a Shabu Shabu restaurant that has poor food. This particular location lacks customer service. Until a few days ago we used to be regular guests at this location because it's close to our home. Our experience has been that when the restaurant is less than half occupied, the servers are attentive, however, when it's past the halfway mark you are pretty much ignored. They issue you a card and will stamp it once for every Shabu dish you order. We never asked for it but the owner insisted that we get this card. So since we go there at least twice a month and order 3 dishes each time, we were told the next time we visit, we will get a free Shabu dish. So during our last visit, we thought we should get one of our dishes free, however, when we presented the card, the wife of the owner made her decision and told us we will get our free dish the next time we visit!! so she stamped our card for 2 Shabu's when we ordered 3, and that pretty much turned us off from ever visiting this unfair establishment again. Next time we will be visiting California Shabu Shabu on Baker in Costa Mesa.
Best Shabu EVER!!.
From the outside- this place is unassuming. In the corner of a shopping center, I didn't expect much. This left plenty of room to be impressed. On the recommendation of a friend we tried it out. The owner came over and explained how we were to cook the food personally- gave us recommendations on beer and sake as well. Waitress' - you won't get better service!
I've been to other Shabu places but this is the first one that I have been to that offers different qualities of meat. Choice beef, Prime cut, and Kobe. I have only had the Prime and Kobe and they are to die for. Hank the owner takes a lot of pride in his business and the quality of food he serves and it shows.
Since the first time going about 4 months ago- we have upped our Shabu intake to about 2 times a week. The servers know us by name and know our orders and welcome any guests we happen to bring with us. I am addicted to the House of Shabu Shabu and I think you will be too once you give it a try! My only recommendation is have one of the servers or Hank the owner show you how to cook the meat properly- even if you have been to Shabu before... if you leave it in too long you'll be eating beef jerky!!!
shabu shabu is a very nice balance of meat and vegetables...just don't over cook your veggies or you'll have no nutritional value...unless you drink the whole soup =i The meat is a decent quality but the Kobe...oooooooooh the kobe... it melts ... in your mouth~ *drool* sauces are very good here, both the ponzu and the goma.
When I used to live in Irvine, I would frequent this place at LEAST once a week. Two-three times a week on a regular basis. Harry (the owner) is a great guy who'll do his best to introduce any beginners to the spectacular world of shabu shabu. Sometimes you may have to tell him it's your first time (just like any work it gets busy sometimes and we all get tired).
for the fearless masochists out there, ask for the "hot drop" or pure cap to spice up your meal (one drop for most in the sauces and the soup base will be sufficient...)
