Not an unpleasent experience. The baked goat cheese and seared ahi tuna salad was very good. Its portion was not overbearing, and neither was its price. I also ordered oysters on the half-shell, and they were delicious, except for one, which was creamy inside. Perhaps I ordered it during spawning season, but to this day I prefer not to think of what that mush was. Compared to other Pacific Highway, Newport restaurants, which charge for the location and are a dissapointment, I felt that this was fine-dining that was worth the inflated prices. However, it was not so delitefully enjoyable that I feel the need to go back in the near future.

Quality Food, Great Service, Beautiful Atmosphere. One of the local hidden gems in Orange County. I frequent the restaurant on a regular basis with friends and family. Sitting outside feeling the ocean breeze, enjoying good food with the people you love is truly priceless. If you go during the day definitely request a patio table outside.

Best View, Best Food in NB. One thing you can almost count on is a Great View means so-so food. Well that's not the case with the Cannery!

The Food is Wonderful and the View is really relaxing. Nice Wine List!

Thank you but I'll pass..... Sure, the location is beautiful and there is a nice variety of items on the menu. The problem is that everytime I've gone my steak has been overcooked and when I returned it and asked for it medium rare it came back out black and blue (barely seared.) In addition the plate was so hot I burnt my hand on it - literally you could hear the flesh sear when you touched it. At these prices I don't think it's too much to ask to cook something to the right temperature and not punish the guest when you get it wrong. This is a nice restaurant, not a dive restaurant. I also don't enjoy ordering a bottle of wine for $140 and have the waitress tell me "You must have a lot of money to buy a bottle that expensive." One it's not that expensive and two I can't think of a better way of making my guest and myself uncomfortable. Tacky, tacky, tacky.

A must try!. I recently visited this restaurant for the first time. What a great place! We sat upstairs where we had a view of the boats docked nearby. There was table seating as well as seating available on sofas where you could eat which was great for cozy encounters with someone special or just so you can get crazy with your friends. They have a nice sized wine list if you like that sort of thing. I had sushi on my visit which I noticed was a little more expensive than what I typically see elsewhere. But it won't stop me from going back and trying all the great seafood they had on their menu!

Great place for special night out. My wife and I love going to new places and The Cannery did not disappoint. We went there for V-Day and had a great time. We had reservations for 7:00 but were told they were running 15 minutes behind. We were seated around 7:45. I guess its to be expected when you go anywhere on V-Day. Regardless, we spent the time at the bar and had some great drinks. I highly recommend the bloody mary's. On to the food. I had the lamb chops and was a bit dissappointed with the portion size, but they were cooked to perfection. My wife had the filet mignon and it would hold its own against any great steak house. The atmosphere is romanticish and great for a first date.

Fantastic. The Cannery is a good way to get away from the cheesy restaurants/bars in Newport. It has a good crowd and good atmosphere.

Historic industrial cannery-turned-restaurant provides fresh seafood and a full Japanese menu on the Newport waterfront.. The Scene
Originally opened as a cannery in 1921 and turned into a restaurant in 1973 (refurbished in 1999), the Cannery holds a prominent spot in the Newport Beach history books. The main draws are the waterfront dining, outdoor patio tables, fresh seafood and lively bar scene. Professionals and 30-something couples dominate, lapping up the yacht-heavy Newport Beach dock-scene, viewable from both the upstairs and lower dining rooms. Neatly pressed, friendly servers offer expert advice and wine-pairing suggestions.

The Food
Steaks, chops and seafood anchor this traditional, which also includes a full Japanese menu, serving everything from sushi to chicken teriyaki. Generously portioned appetizers including tender mussels, baked goat cheese and seared ahi tuna salad are great for sharing. Entrees such as the bouillabaisse--chock full of fresh seafood and shellfish--and the tender lamb chops highlight. Finish with the white-chocolate creme brulee or the house specialty--the Balboa sundae.

Fantastic Food on the Water. The Cannery's quality is far better than any other Waterfront restaurant in NB. The Wine List is large and the selections are a Comb of Fresh Fish and Beef, Salads too! The service is always dependable.
