Editorial Review for Tuk Tuk Thai Cafe – by Randi Schmelzer

In Short
Owned by the folks behind Silver Lake's popular Rambutan, this small, square restaurant serves similar fare to Thai-craving Westsiders. Closely spaced, warm-wood tables fill the well-lit, yellow dining room, its walls accented with cobalt blue sconces. A substantial, veggie-heavy menu includes standbys like chicken satay and pad thai. More unusual dishes such as papaya salad, wok bowls and green-curry dumplings are also featured. The house specialty dessert is coconut sticky rice with fresh mango.

Insider Tips

Save Money

Weekday lunch specials include an entree, rice and salad, egg drop-mushroom soup or a spring roll for under $10.

Where to Sit

Indoor tables are intimately arranged, but they are candlelit and the chairs are comfortable. The sidewalk seats are better suited for waiting carryout customers than actual diners.

Parking

Don't park in the dry cleaners' lot in the back--they tow. Instead, opt for a street meter or side-street space.

A friend of mine, whom is a really picky eater recommended it to me. Well I was really impressed, b/c I'm a sourthern girl from N.O. So everything I let on my pallet has to be well seasoned and a hearty meal. Well I had this wontong soup with some ot the eggrolls and a small side of curry soup. I was floored when finished. I could'nt eat it all and wish they had a location in Atlanta. It had been 10 years since I had been to L.A., so this was a trip I refused to let go bad. I expected everything to go perfect and it started w/TukTuk. The service is really attentive and the waiters and waitresses were really cute, the aroma makes you wanna eat everything, my Wonton Soup was perfect. I will be back

Pros: Good food, great service

Cons: Parking, tables placed to close together.

I was craving Thai one night and decided to try a different place, so I googled "Best Thai food in Los Angeles," and came across Tuk Tuk Thai Cafe. I overlooked the negative ratings since their were more positive ratings overall, so I decided to call for carry-out to get the generic favorite of mine, Pad Thai. The waitress asked if I wanted it with Shrimp without telling me it would be $4.00 extra, so when I got to the restaurant, I went ahead and paid for it without questioning as long as it would be as "good" as the reviews say it is. I eagerly drove home to take my first bite of the Shrimp Pad Thai, and turned out to be extremely disappointed with the soggy noodles that had only a few dried up pieces of shrimp, and an overly sweet or sour taste that left a dry salty distasteful feel in my mouth. I'm not one to complain, so I forced myself to keep eating it until it became unbearable. When I realized the agony of forcing myself to the point of not being able to eat it anymore and that my $15 had gone down the drain, I drove all the way back to the restaurant, returned the dish, and asked for my money back. Instead of apologizing for the bad food, the waitress argued with me and pronounced that I had eaten half of it already, as if I was lying and asking for a free meal. I felt like I had to defend myself, so I explained to her that I am not one to complain or return food, and that it was my 1st time doing this. I emphasized that it was the worst Pad Thai I ever had. Even a hole in the wall place had better food than this place! Anyhow, after getting offended and a bit hot-tempered, she tried to shut me up and give me my money back. All I can say is RUDE SERVICE and TERRIBLE FOOD!!! Whoever gave reviews on good service and good food did not have that waitress OR that Pad Thai. Either the manager needs to monitor his cooks and servers, or some customers are just lucky. In my book of best restaurants, it SHOULD BE consistent!

Pros: ambience

Cons: food, service, integrity
