Editorial Review for Napa Rose at Grand Californian – by Jane Tunks
The Scene
With a window overlooking Grizzly Peak, Napa Rose furthers the Grand Californian's Arts and Crafts theme with light-colored woods, autumnal colors and murals of vineyard scenes celebrating the Golden State's wine-producing regions. The restaurant's wine cellar boast 600 vintages, most from California.
The Food
An ambitious menu showcases innovative California ingredients like mineshaft-ripened blue cheese, Sierra golden trout and grapevine-smoked salmon. Starters like goat cheese-stuffed grape leaves in a creamy roast pepper sauce and a rich portobello mushroom bisque "cappuccino" gilded by a brandied thyme-froth jump-start the taste buds. Main courses further enthrall: Yellowtail is perfectly grilled, then bathed in creamy, tart-sweet mango sauce; prime rib pork loin--two ribs deep, steeped in a complex "chaparral" sauce (a blend of sage, rosemary, thyme and cayenne)--earns its signature status. Ultrarich chocolate pâté falls somewhere between mousse and a flour-less chocolate cake and is garnished with a dollop of sweet hazelnut cream.

Everything was really wonderful about this place...food, wine list, decor, and service. I had the Grilled 16oz Pork "Porterhouse" Chop and it was excellent and the wine went perfectly with the entree. There was an unexpected delay with the dessert, but the waiter was very attentive and he brought us free dessert drinks, which were great. (We didn't even ask him for it but he brought it anyway)
Pros: Food & wine, service, decor
Cons: None (yeah it's pricey but well worth it)

As a self-described "foodie", who pretends to be Andrew Sutton on weekends, I can tell you that this is the best food I have enjoyed anywhere! The atmosphere and service are unsurpassed, and did I mention the food?? Andrew is a genius! Although not as recognized as Jean-Georges or some of the Food Network clones, his creations are a magnificient, mind-blowing, mouth-watering experience! I have been to Napa Rose no less than 8 times in the past 3 years and I live 450 miles away from the restaurant. Even better than Masa's in S.F., or Joel Robuchon's duo at the MGM in Vegas. The only negative thing I can say about Napa Rose is that it is not the best place for kids. They do a great job with the "kid food" thing, but kids do not want to wait 1 1/5 - 2 hours to eat pizza. To fully experience everything this place has to offer, ask for the "kitchen seats" and talk to Andrew and his staff while they create their masterpieces.
Pros: Everything!!
Cons: Not the best place for kids. The cafeteria next door would be better suited for them.
