In Short
With its mock-ups of pastoral seaside scenes, semi-surrealistic paintings of a fisherman's catch and kid-pleasing menu, Catal is Mediterranean dining with Disney sensibilities. Appetizers include marinated olives or arugula salad with stewed dates and manchego slivers. Traditional entrees include braised Moroccan-spiced lamb and paella a la Valenciana with seafood, chicken and chorizo. The downstairs wine bar, more reminiscent of Napa Valley than the Mediterranean, offers 40 wines by the glass and tapas, sandwiches and salads.

In mid-December I asked my husband to take me to Catal for dinner after a day at Disneyland. It was my birthday and Catal is one of my favorite places to eat at, and I don?t get to do it often, so I took advantage of the opportunity. We were seated at about 5:00 p.m. My husband ordered the New York strip and I had the boneless short ribs with fontina mac & cheese, along with a Cesar salad starter. The salad was delicious, and after a long wait, our dinners arrived. After a few bites, I was disappointed with my dinner. The short ribs were ?blackened,? which I don?t care for and the taste was more like a roast I make at home rather than something special I expect from Catal. The mac & cheese was lukewarm, almost as if the plate were prepared well in advance of the meat being put on the plate. Perhaps I missed the word ?blackened? in the description of the dish, and perhaps the mac & cheese was intended to not be hot. I decided in that moment that I would just accept that I ordered something I didn?t care for and put up with it. I don?t send food back. My husband?s steak seemed to be good. He ate most of it and the potatoes. We paid the bill in cash, which came to approximately $92 or $94 plus tip and left about an hour after we arrived. I was disappointed with my birthday meal and just decided at that point to not go back to Catal in the foreseeable future. However, that evening my husband spent most of the night in the bathroom. It?s one thing to have a bad meal and not go back, it?s quite another to have someone get sick from it. After receiving a disappointing meal, paying almost $100 for it, and then getting sick I don?t think we?ll be back. I?ve eaten at other Patina Group establishments and have always had a delicious experience. Needless to say, we will not be going to Catal again. I wrote them a letter about our experience and have never heard one word back from the management.

I love the UVA Bar at Downtown Disney. They offer a wonderful selection of premium wines, as well as other spirits to consume. The atmosphere is fun. The bar is shaped in a circle, which makes it a great for people watching. Appetizers are also pretty good. Prices are very expensive.
